Discovering Paradise
Curacao's iconic turquoise cove
Playa Kenepa Grandi, known in Papiamentu as Grote Knip, is the beach most people picture when they imagine Curacao. A broad horseshoe of soft white sand drops into water so clear that the colour stacks in bands, pale aqua over the sand shallows, jade over the seagrass, deep turquoise where the cove opens to the sea. Low limestone cliffs frame both ends, and the lookout above the eastern point gives you the classic elevated view down onto the whole bay.
This is the largest of the two Kenepa coves and the busier one, especially on Sundays when local families arrive with coolers and music. The water is calm and gently shelving, so it suits confident swimmers and waders alike. Snorkeling is good along the rocky edges, and the brave climb the eastern cliff to jump into the deep blue water below (check the depth and entry point first).
The quieter sister cove, Playa Kenepa Chiki, sits a short walk over the headland and works well as a calmer follow-up. Both are part of the rugged Westpunt end of the island, which also holds Playa Forti for sunsets and Playa Grandi for snorkeling with sea turtles. Come on a weekday morning for the calmest water and the emptiest sand.
